I would assume that if I'm installing to USB/SD and not using the disk array on each host to install XenServer too, that the entire array would be used as the iSCSI backing store.

Is this correct to assume, and is still functional?

That is not mandatory. It was the design used in the reference design which split the XenServer storage from VM storage. It's a bit overkill, but very redundant.

Most installations are on top of a single large RAID where XenServer occupies the first 2 partitions and the third partition, which is default local storage is converted/managed by iscsi-ha (the HA-Lizard storage management component).

Assuming you are using our installer to build the cluster, you will simply need to pass in the path to the VM storage when prompted. Assuming your 8 disks are in a single RAID, then you would pass in something like /dev/sdb.

** Be aware, when installing XenServer, the installer will prompt you to select which partitions are to be used for local storage. DO Not select the 8-disk RAID at this point otherwise XenServer will combine that storage with the third partition of the USB to create a single VG for local storage. Our installer will not handle that and will cause your cluster to misbehave.

So setup the array on each server using all 8 Disks, from the RAID Management console, but when installing XenServer don't set a target to be used as the default VM storage.

Once the servers are up and the HA-Lizard-No-SAN client is downloaded to each I then enter the path to the array.

Ok.

Correct. XenServer would sit on your SSD/USB and the entire storage array will be used solely for VM storage.

This is the same as our reference design where we split XS storage from VM storage.

Is the path to the array not /dev/cciss.... normally?
